Okay, so there is a patch in the patch tracker already that does this, but it
contains lots of non-related stuff (#1479121 by Koen D'Hondt).

Still, I tried to incorporate the good parts from that and here's my take.

Now, run 'buildconf' in the source root to setup the configure scripts and
related stuff. Then run make as usual.

Seems to work for me.

(this patch relies somewhat on some of the previous changes I already
submitted)
